 Re: Karate VS Muay Thai
It's probably my inexperience at striking showing, but I didn't see much difference in the delivery other than one big exception (and maybe that's the difference!): he pulled the "karate" kick back after landing, but followed-through with the "muay thai" kick (like coach Wally and coach Chris tell us to). It seems to me that that would account for the major difference in applied force. I would like to see the results of a "karate" kick that was followed-through and a "muay thai" kick that was pulled back by Vera. Is that typical of karate; to achieve a faster, more precise (if less powerful) strike? Would not following through on a "muay thai" kick render it by definition not a muay thai kick and vice-versa for the karate kick?

 Re: Karate VS Muay Thai
Jason - from what I can see, his Muay Thai kick has more rotation from start to finish. Think of it as swinging a club, whereas the Karate kick is more of a snap.
Look away from the actual impact and look at his planted foot - it rotates a lot further with the Muay Thai kick, which continues the motion and generates all that force.
The tradeoff appears to be that a Karate kick should theoretically allow the deliverer to get back into their stance.
However, I watched the video with no sound, and don't profess to be an expert in Karate or Thai boxing, so maybe someone else can weigh in and clarify.

 Re: Karate VS Muay Thai
nice observations marc. Keep in mind you have a muay thai practioner trying to demonstrate a karate kick. They shouldve got a karate guy to demonstrate it.
